Case Study: Coachella Live Event
The Customer & The Goal
AEG Presents is one of the world’s most prominent presenters of live music and entertainment events, and each year they organize the Coachella Music Festival in Indio, California. In 2019, Coachella was looking for a way to gamify its festival and encourage attendee behavior with digital collectibles.
Our Solution
We designed and executed the Coachella Coin program inside the official Coachella app, gamifying the festival by rewarding fans with coins and digital collectibles for completing onsite challenges.
This program incorporated important sponsors like American Express and Shake Shack and drove thousands of IRL brand engagements. For example, on the first Saturday of the festival, we learned that a food vendor was underperforming. Within 30 minutes, we had created a new challenge in the app that drove hundreds of new customers to their food stall.
Results
28% of all festival attendees engaged with the Coachella Coin section of the app
15% of registered attendees completed one or more challenges
10% opted to receive their digital collectibles as NFTs after the festival
The results of this pilot year were an overwhelming success, with Coachella’s Head of Digital calling it “by far the smoothest and most successful first-year digital program” they had ever done.
